Roridula gorgonias , IMP-0261
The Roridula gorgonias is a fascinating, proto-carnivorous plant from coastal South Africa. This plant is similar to a sundew in that it has sticky leaves that attract insects, but rather than glistening dewy drops of digestive enzymes, the leaves of the Roridula are coated in a resin-like substance that lacks the enzymes needed to digest their prey. That's where the symbiotic Pameridea assassin bug comes in. These insects are able to traverse the sticky leaves where they find the trapped insects, consume them for themselves, and then defecate onto the leaves of the Roridula, which is how the plant ultimately gets the nutrients it needs!
