Drosera prolifera forms lush rosettes of broad, kidney-shaped leaves held on long, slender petioles. The leaves are covered in glistening tentacles and can develop attractive reddish coloration under stronger light. New plantlets can form from its flower stalks when they contact the surrounding substrate, allowing mature plants to gradually form impressive colonies.
Drosera prolifera is native to the rainforests of northeastern Queensland, Australia, where it is restricted to cool, humid, shaded habitats. It belongs to a closely related group of sundews commonly known as the "Queensland Sisters." In cultivation, D. prolifera appreciates high humidity, consistently moist soil, and moderate light rather than the intense illumination preferred by many other sundews. Warm to intermediate temperatures with protection from excessive heat and drying conditions will produce lush growth. We recommend growing it in enclosed terrariums of sphagnum moss where it will multiply over time. Its unusual foliage and prolific vegetative reproduction make Drosera prolifera one of the most distinctive tropical sundews in cultivation.
