Drosera bequaertii, CAR-1351
This unusual African sundew is a perennial species that develops a short, upright stem topped by a cluster of rosetted leaves. The leaves are densely covered in hairs beneath, while the upper leaf surface bears the characteristic prey-catching tentacles. Mature plants produce tall flower stalks bearing bright pink flowers. Drosera bequaertii was formally described by Auguste Taton in 1945 and has also been known under the synonym Drosera compacta.
Drosera bequaertii is native to tropical south-central Africa, with populations known from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Zambia. It grows in regions with a seasonally dry tropical climate. In cultivation, this uncommon African species appreciates strong light, consistently moist soil during active growth, and warm to moderate temperatures. Its compact, upright growth habit and rarity in cultivation make it an especially interesting species for collectors of African Drosera.
